Swimming laps for an hour burns between 500-1000 calories, depending on how fast and consistently you are swimming.  And, when you swim breastroke or backstroke, you’re burning about the same number of calories as a fast walk or a slow jog.  Swimming also uses almost all of your major muscle groups, and places a vigorous demand on your heart and lungs.  (Plus, for those who complain that the pool water is too warm, did you know that you actually lose more calories swimming in warm water than in cold water?)  Wow!
