April 2015

posted Mar 31, 2015, 7:28 AM by Dana Vazzana   [ updated Mar 31, 2015, 7:29 AM ]

Hello, swimming families!  The weather is finally starting to warm up....hooray for spring!  Here are the ASA events coming up in April:

  • There will be NO PRACTICE on Friday, April 3 or Saturday, April 4 because of the Easter holiday.  However, we will have regular practices on Monday, April 6 (even though there is no school!)
  • On Saturday, April 18 from 1:30-3:00 we will be at the Natatorium for an ASA Mock Meet.  These are a lot of fun!  Juniors and Swim Team members are all welcome to participate.  A Mock Meet is great practice for the upcoming summer swim meets.  Swimmers will participate in events appropriate for their age and swim level (for examples, juniors will do 25 yard freestyle and 25 yard backstroke) and we will record their times.  We need parents to help out as timers!  If you are willing to help out with this, please reply to let me know.  We will provide the stopwatches.  There will be no morning practice that day.
  • On Monday, May 11 at 6:30pm we will have our annual ASA Parent Meeting, tentatively to be held at the shelter by the Aquatic Center.  Please attend to learn about upcoming ASA events, give your own input, and vote for the Exec Board for next year.  Also, if you are interested in serving on the exec board, please let me know.  We still have the Safety Chair and PR/Fundraising positions to fill.  (This, of course, is not technically in April but we want you to mark your calendars early.)
We will have updates soon about the summer schedule and swim meets.  See you at the pool!

Fall Registration and Parent Meeting

posted Aug 24, 2014, 2:06 PM by Dana Vazzana   [ updated Aug 24, 2014, 2:33 PM ]

We will have our Fall Parent Meeting at 6:45 p.m. on Monday, August 25 in the shelter by the Aquatic Center.  It's supposed to be hot outside, so we will try to keep it short!  At the meeting, parents will have a chance to meet the members of the ASA Executive Board, ask questions, and fill out registration paperwork for fall.

There are two steps to registering your swimmer for the upcoming season:

1) Complete the Swim Policies and Release of Liability form and the USA Swimming Form and pay USA Swimming dues:

Note that the USA Swimming annual fee has been raised to $60 for the 2014-2015 season.  Paper copies of the form will be available at the Fall Parent Meeting.

2) Complete the online Swimmer Registration Form:

You must fill out the form separately for each swimmer in your family. However, it is not necessary to repeat the parent contact information.  You may type "same" in that field for siblings of the first swimmer entered.  This information is updated every year, so you will need to fill out the form again even if your swimmer has recently joined the team.

The Fall 2014 swim schedule has been finalized and is posted on our website: http://www.asaaquadogs.com/  .  Note that there have been some changes from last season.

See you Monday, and happy swimming!

August Newsletter

posted Aug 24, 2014, 1:53 PM by Dana Vazzana   [ updated Aug 24, 2014, 2:33 PM ]

Hello, swimming families!  It's hard to believe, but the end of the summer is fast approaching.  :(  Fortunately, we'll keep right on swimming all year long!  Here are some dates to note for August:

Friday, August 15: last day of summer practice season.  Practice on Friday will be a "splash bash", which means that the kids get to just swim around and have fun in the water.  Juniors can stay longer if they like, and parents are welcome to bring poolside snacks for the swimmers to share.

August 16-24: no practice.  The first week of school is busy with evening meet-and-greets and other events, so we will take a swim break.

Monday, August 25: First day of fall practice!  Also, at 6:45 p.m. on Monday 8/25 we will have our Fall Parent Meeting during evening practice.  Parents are encouraged to attend in order to meet the ASA executive board members and receive general updates on the swim team, finances, and fall registration procedures.  We will also vote on the budget for the upcoming year.  The meeting will tentatively take place in the shelter by the Aquatic Center parking lot (I'll send a reminder email later and confirm the location at that time.)

The fall schedule is still tentative (pending coach availability and pool approval), but this is the current plan:

Mondays: 4-5pm and 6:45-8:15pm swim team, 4-4:45pm juniors.  Note that there will no longer be an option for 90-minute practices after school, as these were not frequently attended.
Tuesdays: 4-5pm swim team
Wednesdays: no practice.  Wednesday practices had very sparse attendance, so this practice was dropped from the schedule.
Thursdays: 4-5pm and 6:45-8:15pm swim team, 4-4:45pm juniors.
Fridays: Fun Fridays 4-5pm for swim team members
Saturdays: 11:30-1 swim team, 11:30-12:15 juniors. That's right!  Juniors will now have three practice options per week!

Again, the above schedule is tentative.  I will send the official version as soon as we have the details worked out.

We've had several new swimmers join the team over the last couple of months, which is terrific!  We're looking forward to a great new season of swimming with all of you!

July 2014 Newsletter

Hello, swim families!  We are right in the middle of the best swim season of the year.  Encourage your friends to join the team!  New swimmers may begin at any time.

We have a few changes to the swim practice schedule for the upcoming month:

Tuesday, July 1: There WILL be regular practice at 7pm.  We had originally cancelled this due to the Hannibal meet, but did not have enough swimmers register for the meet to cancel practice.
Thursday, July 3 and Friday, July 4: no practice due to the holiday weekend.

Remember that Saturday, July 19 will be our ASA Aquadogs home swim meet!  We encourage all swimmers regardless of level to participate in the home meet.  We will also need help from parents to set up, work as timers and organizers during the meet, and clean up after the event.  A sign-up sheet for meet volunteers will be sent in a separate email.

Our swimmers and coaches are having fun with the new Swim Rewards program.  A few of them are close to earning free time at the end of practice now!  As a reminder, here is the link to the details: Swim Rewards Program

See you at the pool!

Hello, swim families!  Summer is finally here....the best swim season of all!

Summer swim practices are under way.  Remember that the summer schedule is as follows:
  • Swim team: MWF 11:00-12:30 and TuTh 7:00-8:30pm (swimmers can stay for the whole 90 minutes or just for the first hour)
  • Juniors: MWF 11:00-11:45
Practices will be held in the outdoor pool, weather permitting.  If you haven't already signed up for Textcaster, be sure to do so at https://my.textcaster.com/asa/Default.aspx?ID=98abd64c-6618-43d4-a261-8371be8f7324 to receive announcements of weather-related practice cancellations.  Note that you can receive emails instead of texts if you don't have a cell phone.  We will send a textcaster message any time practice is cancelled, which does tend to happen on a regular basis now that we are in thunderstorm season.

We are kicking off the summer season with a fun new incentive program for swimmers!  Our awesome coaches have worked out the new Aquadogs Reward Program....details below:

AQUADOGS,
We are excited to announce the beginning of our Reward Program!  Athletes
will have opportunities to earn rewards while swimming and competing.  This
will help instill responsibility and ownership of the sport.  For the
summer we will be operating on a punch card system.

Here's How Your Athlete Can Earn Punches:

   - 1 punch for bringing a water bottle
   - 1 punch if athlete is on deck at the start of practice ready to swim
   - 1 punch for bringing your goggles and wearing them
   - 1 punch for wearing a swim cap for the entire practice time
   - 2 punches for each event swam at a meet

What Your Athlete Will Be Earning as They Earn Punches:

   - 25 punches:   swimming tattoo (temporary of course)
   - 50 punches:   10 minutes of free time at the end of practice
   - 75 punches:   swimming sticker
   - 100 punches: Swim Today bracelet
   - 125 punches: help the coaches plan the workout for the day
   - 150 punches: kick day for the team
   - 175 punches: bag tag
   - 200 punches: game day for the team

Each athlete will have their own punch card as they work up the scale
toward bigger and better rewards.  These will be at the pool where swimmers
can see them at each practice.  We are so excited about this wonderful new
program!  See you at the pool!

Aquadogs Head Coach

Finally, remember to keep watching your email for announcements regarding upcoming swim meets.  Our first one is June 7, and you should have already received an email with details from our Meet Coordinator, Andrea Maag.  We're looking forward to seeing lots of Aquadogs at the meets!  If you would like a purple ASA swim cap to wear to the meets, they are available for $12.50.  Send me an email and I can get one to you.

Happy swimming, everyone!

May Newsletter

posted May 5, 2014, 1:38 PM by Deb Krusniak   [ updated May 5, 2014, 1:38 PM ]

Hi, everyone!  We got the news today that the pool renovation is set to be complete on schedule, so we can now finalize our spring/summer practice schedule.  Read below for important dates!
  • Swim practices will resume on Monday, May 5 with the regular school year schedule.
  • Don't forget our ASA Parent Meeting at 6:30pm on Monday, May 5!  We will meet in the shelter just below the Aquatic Center parking lot.  At the meeting, we will vote for officers for the upcoming year and give everyone general updates on the team.  All parents should plan to attend (and send the kids to practice during the meeting)!  We still need a Membership Chair and a Meet Coordinator, so please contact me ASAP if you are willing to consider either of these positions.
  • The last day for our spring practice schedule will be Thursday, May 22.  We will then take a break for Memorial Day weekend, and resume practice on Tuesday, May 27 with the summer practice schedule: 11:00-12:30 MWF and 7-8:30 TuTh for Swim Team, 11:00-11:45 MWF for Juniors.
Because of the break from practice, swimmers who paid full dues in April need only pay 1/2 dues for May.

We also now have the summer schedule for swim meets (more details will be announced closer to the given dates):
  • Saturday, June 7 at Quincy YMCA, with Quincy and Hannibal: 1:00 pm with warmups at noon.
  • Saturday, June 14 at Kahoka: 10:00 am with warmups at 9:30.  This meet is only for swimmers aged 10 and under.
  • Wednesday, June 19 at Hannibal, with Memphis: 6pm with warmups at 5:30.
  • Tuesday, July 1 at Hannibal with Louisiana: 6pm with warmups at 5:30.
  • Saturday, July 19: HOME MEET at Kirksville Aquatic Center.  Start time probably 9am.
  • Tuesday, July 22 at Canton with Quincy YMCA: 6pm with warmups at 5:30.
  • Wednesday, July 30 at Sheridan Swim Club in Quincy with Can-Oka: time TBA
  • Saturday, August 2 at Sheridan Swim Club in Quincy: River Country Championships (tentative; some issues with the date).
ASA Aquadogs swimmers (juniors and Swim Team members) may attend any of these meets.  None are required.  The only requirement is that a swimmer must attend at least one River Country meet to be eligible to participate in the River Country championship on August 2.  Because of the expense of bringing a coach, we will not be able to send coaches to all of these meets.  We hope to be able to send coaches to the following meets:

June 7 at Quincy YMCA

June 14 at Kahoka (10 and under meet)

July 1 at Hannibal

July 19 (home meet)

(July 30 at Quincy- Sheridan or River Country championships at Sheridan)

and will do so if we have at least five swimmers registered for a given meet.  We request a $10 meet fee for each participating swimmer to defray the cost of paying a coach to attend.

Last but not least, we will be saying goodbye to some wonderful coaches and welcoming some wonderful new ones!  Coach Tess is graduating from Truman and Coach Annie's husband will be finishing up at ATSU, so both of them will be leaving us in May.  We have hired Beth Eyanson and Casey Jepson, both of whom have four years of swimming experience with the Truman Bulldogs swim team and both of whom will be in Kirksville this fall pursuing graduate degrees at Truman.  We look forward to working with them, starting this June!

See you at the meeting on Monday!

Summer Swim Meet Schedule

posted Apr 10, 2014, 10:44 AM by Deb Krusniak   [ updated May 5, 2014, 1:52 PM ]

The Aquadogs summer swim meet schedule looks like this so far (tentative, as of 5/5/14):

  • June 7, Sat., at the Quincy YMCA with their team and the Hannibal swim team. Meet would start at 1:00, with warm-ups at noon.
  • June 14, Sat., at Kahoka. This is the 10 and Under meet for young swimmers. Meet would start at 10:00 with warm-ups at 9:30. Kahoka has a heated pool.
  • July 1, Tues., at Hannibal, with Louisiana. Meet would start at 6:00 with warm-ups at 5:30.
  • July 9, Wed., at Hannibal, with Memphis. Meet would start at 6:00 with warm-ups at 5:30.
  • July 19, Sat. Our home meet. Memphis would like to be included again this year.
  • July 22, Tues., at Canton with Quincy YMCA. Warm-ups at 5:30, meet at 6:00.
  • July 30, Wed., at the Sheridan Swim club in Quincy, with Kan-Oka swim team.
  • Aug., 2, Sat., at Sheridan Swim Club. River Country Championships.
Championship fees: the entry fees will be raised to $20 per swimmer this year, going up from $15 per swimmer last year. All other meets are free.

NOTES: ASA Aquadogs swimmers (juniors and Swim Team members) may attend any of these meets.

Officials Training Session: Sheridan would like to host an Official’s Training Session for the River Country teams before the June swim meets start. It would follow the USA rules, but not be USA sanctioned. They would like to have a couple of “stroke judges” from each team (parents or coaches) so that during meets they can judge and, if necessary, disqualify swimmers more consistently and make the meets more fair. Swimmers who don’t get DQ’d might not know they are doing strokes wrong, and that leads them to get DQ’d in larger meets where more is at stake. They don’t plan on punishing young swimmers who are learning, but older swimmers really need to follow the rules.  Let ASA Meet Coordinator, Andrea Maag, know if you're interested in attending with the Aquadogs.
